I ended up having extra time at the end of my unit on Egypt (more to come on that) and second graders were able to finish their Ming Dynasty vases! YAY! I ran out of watercolors- WHY DO THEY GO SO FAST!!!!??? So, we had to finish these with tempera paint, which turned out...interesting. Next time, I will make sure I have watercolors.
We made our vases first after learning about symmetry, and decorated them with blue markers. We cut them out and glued them onto a larger piece of paper (12" x 18"). Then we drew the cherry blossom branch coming out of the vase, using brown and pink markers. Lastly, we painted in the background with warm colors! This lesson is adapted from Cassie Stephens, who I happened to see at the NAEA (National Art Education Association) convention this past weekend.

The convention was so much fun! I went with my fellow art teacher in another district, Katherine, to New Orleans. I highly recommend it. I learned so much and was able to attend not only one of Cassie's presentations, but also Jessica's from the Art of Ed.
Egypt unit recap coming soon!
